Computer is 7 years old so now going to upgrade it - and so will have to get some anti-spy stuff to go with it So what is the best anti-spy stuff ? Norton Anti Virus of McAfee or Kaspersky ? Any recommendations ? Thanks Matt
AGV free version has done me fine for years. ...until about a week ago when an update started messing up Winamp. Could be said that I'm a caveman for still using Winamp. ...but personaly my tunes are more important than my scanner. So at the moment I'm relying on Defender and every now and then I'll do a scan with Spybot and Malwarebytes.
ESET - used it myself at work and home for the last 12 years. It’s also been put on all the kids laptops from new (they’re now 28, 24 and 21 so probably wouldn’t appreciate the kids comment) over the same period and nobody has had any virus or malware problems.
Another happy Eset user of many years. If I had to change I would look at Malbytesware. As for the ones you mentioned: Norton = Symantec Mcafee = Intel Kaspersky = Russian As for Mac vs Windows being most secure I would, and do use Linux, plenty of distros out there that specialise in being secure up to and including paranoid level I do still have to use Windows for some stuff though.
AGV and spybot for years No problems I have heard so many horror story’s about mcafee and norton slowing everything down and doing all sorts of thing that I have never left them on any of my computers that have come with them
Thank you for your replies - I have never heard of ESET before, so will run through a few reviews of them as well. I had Norton installed on a cheap Toshiba laptop years ago, and all it could do was check itself for viruses ! it drained so much of the cheap system resources that it seemed that all it could do was sit there checking itself for Viruses with with the fan blowing How about this - sounds fun ! Anyway a few more videos to watch and reviews to got though........
I am no computer boff so I am not speaking from any position of expertise or knowledge, but I have used Malwarebytes for several years and found it to be excellent at protecting my machine but more importantly easy to use and understand.
Actually the built in Microsoft product seems to be highly rated by those that ought to know but it tends to be overlooked because nobody gets paid for providing it.
My new machine is 2 weeks old today. It came with MacAfee antivirus, installed, the biggest load of cr@p ever. After 12 months you have to pay for the factory fitted apps anyway, so I just carried on with my subscription from my old machine
Thanks for the recommendations, some names I have not heard of at all but still seem to be highly commended. I have had Mac for maybe the last ten years, using Mackeeper anti virus. At the time there was not much choice for Macs. I do like the Dashboard control panel style where you can tell it to do scans and all that business. Really useful. Now moving back to a PC, and all in with an Android phone as well - so bye-bye Mac. Still not decided - new computer should be here in the next few days.
Went with Kaspersky in the end - watched loads of videos on the Tube. Got the 2 year deal so won't have to bother with it again for a while. Found this on the new computer - a 3D Viewer that runs animated 3D models including this Tyrannosaur. Amazing you can manipulate the moving object - from above - below - in front - behind. Incredible. I am going to set this as the Virtual Background for our team meeting on Zoom tomorrow
Unpopular opinion, perhaps, but... I don't use any anti-virus or any-spyware software for roughly 10 years, maybe a bit less, other than Windows Defender.
Avast Antivirus - FREE NordVPN - Nord are doing a two year deal at the moment (which I'm going to get) £64 (as opposed to £64 per year)
Then it is done - 2 year deal and you will likely get updates in that time. Not that expensive in the scheme of things.
All of the big ones are much of a muchness really. Go on eBay and buy a cheap OEM license for as long as you can find. Microsoft bought some Romanian AV company iirc a few years back and in typical Microsoft style have had a bit of a chequered past with the product. It's better than nothing though. To buy some real assurance you'd need to look at decent AETD & AETP stuff and invest some time or pay someone who knows how to use them. So a fiver or so on eBay is probably your best bang for buck.
Looking at this Kaspersky - so far today it has stopped 5 Banners from opening - not really sure what they are, but likely uninvited and not wanted. Yesterday it stopped a couple of attempts to collect data. I am no expert on all this - but stopping junk ads and this level of defense is great news, doing its thing in the background. That 3D viewer app is amazing - you can manipulate a 3D animation and freeze frame it and view from any angle. Change the direction of the light, and the colour of the model - amazing.
