Leaky Fork Oil Seal - Worth a Full Service

    Just noticed one of the front fork oil seals is leaking quite badly - so its time for replacement (quite good timing as have front wheels and tyres off - repainting wheels)

    So question is, bike has 44,000 miles on it (only owned it for the last 1k) and from all the receipts looks like nothing has been done to the forks. So, needs a seal and dust cover change along with oil for sure - but do i get bushes and possibly a spring change done at the same time? I'm about 14 stone (leathered up) - so are different springs or particular oil weight recommended?

    Could likely do this myself (would need to get some tools though) - or was thinking of sending off to suspension specialist to give a good check over. FTR suspension are relatively close - anyone used them for a suspension service?

    If they're being stripped to replace the seals then just about every other conceivable part will also have to come out too, making it easier to inspect and replace any parts that need changing. The going rate for a rebuild, oil and setup is circa £140 if being done by a garage as a fork hand over service.

    When this happened to me used it as an excuse to fit ktech internals:D

    Did you do the K-Techs yourself or get them to do it?

    £140 doesn't sound too bad and peace of mind knowing all setup properly. Just looking around I'm probably looking at £60-£80 doing myself (getting tools, parts, oil etc)

    Had following response from Suspension Specialist:

    The cost will vary depending on exactly what is required internally but if for example the forks have never been serviced since 2007, you will need dust seals, oil seals, guide bushes, slide bushes and oil, this typically costs around £‪180-190‬. We also check the tubes for and bends or dents. Has a 10 day turnaround

    A shock service under the same assumptions will consist of a complete seal head kit, bladder, any damaged shims and of course new oil and gas, this costs around £‪160-180‬ depending if the bump rubber is damaged.

    Seem reasonable? Intending to keep the bike for some time, so might be worth getting the suspension checked properly - big part of getting the most out of the bike. Will leave the engine/ecu tune until next year!

    Seems about right. I paid about £450-£500 for a complete overhaul, both front and back, including new springs to match my weight. This was back in 2015, so could easily be more now.

    Got it done by a specialist for a number of reasons:
    needed a courtesy whilst being sorted
    dont have the tools
    dont know what I'm doing lol

    This was for a 2009 with the older type suspension, the bike was several years old at the point I got it done.
    I asked whether it was better to get bpfs or get the current ones customised - I was recommended to get the latter done


    .... honestly it was night and day!, the OEM springs were way too hard and couldn't even get in the ball park for sag, bike didn't like either high or low speed bumps, but once done it was so compliant, soaked up the bumps, braking used all the travel without bottoming out and cornered like on the proverbial rails

    Hopefully taking shocks up to FTR at the weekend, going full service, replacement Ktech springs (as cheaper than Ohlins and not likely to notice any difference!). Hopefully be a 10 day turnaround and will get them to post back - saves 110 mile round trip again!). Should give a week to get wheel painted - best pull my finger out!

    Similar situation to me.
    My RR6 popped a seal yesterday at Cadwell, so they're going in this morning for seals and oil as I've already had springs. Then I'll get the bike set up.
    Wheels will go in for powder coating today too.
