Hi guys, bought my bike (2018) from a Yamaha dealer a few weeks ago and have done around 600 miles. Checked oil level today and as per picture its up at my thumb, way above max line... my question is do I suck/drain some oil out and is there cause for concern regarding damage.... any advice greatfully received .

Yeah, drain the excess before any more use.

Just to check, and even so, having that much over the max line this wouldn't account for the extra, you have the bike level and are not screwing the dipstick in to get a reading?

Drop your oil into measuring jug. See what you’ve got. Take an image of quantity, you might need it if you have to speak to dealer. If it was way off, I’d definitely inform the dealer of your findings along with your images.
Fill with correct measurement from manual. Fingers crossed and good to go.
    Best of luck mate.

Was the bike warm when you checked it?

I would contact the dealer and make them aware of their error and potentially get them to put it right. That way if there are any problems occur further down the line at least in the short term, you may be able to hold them responsible although good luck with that.
If it hasn’t sprung an oil leak or blowing excess smoke out of the exhaust by now I’d say you’ve probably got away with it.

I have over filled mine after an oil change, obviously measured and drained before turning the engine on but it doesn't take much from memory.

I think it only took around 250ml to get it half way between the max line and where your oil level is. Be interesting to know how much extra you have in there.

Good job you spotted it early mate. Just shows you cant always rely on others doing the job properly!

I think the main worry with this is the crank slapping the oil and airating it giving you less protection. For the amount of miles you have done I think you'd be unlucky to have caused any real damage.

800ml is a lot of extra fluid to have but as you can see on the dipstick this raises the level in the sump 20mm or so? I don't know if this is enough to bring it high enough to interfere with the crank.

I know a couple of track guys who purposely keep the level over the maximum. Not saying it's right or recommending it but might curb some of your worries.

Thanks for the info mate and hopefully it'll be OK... although I'm now worrying there's not enough in it, although I've checked it 300 times

Haha, you sound exactly the same as me!

It will be fine, the big Honda is bomb proof.

Keep an eye on the level, I check mine before every ride and top up when required.

Enjoy it while we have the last of the decent weather ;)

Ha ha, yeah I'm terrible mate, overthink everything I'm off to do the NC500 in a few days so that should be good, and glad I noticed oil level before I set off
