I think you said before your dealer is 21st Moto in Swanley.

This is adding to the ‘hearsay’ and rumour that accompanies that dealer confirming their ineptitude and in some cases dishonesty :(

In future, if convenient, I would recommend Doble in Coulsdon; I bought my bike from them and used them a couple of times, no issues, prompt and courteous; they also have a very good reputation.

Well I know the US generally tends to get parts cheaper than here in the UK but I don’t have any idea what it would cost if I were to try and buy the part from Honda here in the UK. I bought my Blade from Dobles (from Mike D) as he offered a deal that was too good to resist. I’ve had no issues with the team at 21st Moto so will continue to use them until I have an experience that makes me think otherwise. Their service team are a bunch of great guys and you are made to feel valued, so for me that’s good enough for me. I’m sure I’d want to shop around if I weren’t covered by the warranty - in the same way Audi wanted £1200 to change an alternator in my old 3.2v6 TT that I managed to get done for around £450 at a trusted independent garage.

I think the size and number of bikes that Dobles sell mean they are always likely to offer the better deals on new bikes.. I’ve already had a tentative quote from them for an RR-R (non sp) trading in against my current bike and they’re around £1k cheaper than the brief conversation I’ve had with 21st Moto. When I’m more serious about swapping I’ll have a more serious conversation with both.

Anyway, once I get the bike back I’ll update here if the problem comes back - otherwise assume all’s tickertyboo.

If you’ve got a part number just whack it in Fowler’s website and get a price. I had a quick look and they’ve got R1 and GSXR1000 IMU’s between £700-£900. Be wary of RC45’s advice, I suspect he’s a Honda dealer, very quick to defend the Blades reliability at every turn. Or he could be Donald Trump!

I am not a dealer but I have had UK dealers refer their customers to follow my advice when they;re stumped. So there's that lol I just know the SC77 inside out, back to front and outside in.
Defend it? Naw, just trying to help a brother out.

As for the IMU you'll notice Fowler says it on backorder. - 39900-MKF-D40

Thanks for the part no. @RC45 I’d been trying to find the Honda part no. without any luck - think it’s a Bosch MM5.10 IMU but prices for that all seem to be POA. Checked on Fowlers here in the UK and the Honda part part is £722! So nowhere near as cheap as you guys get in the USA - typical.

Anyway, hopefully this is the fault - Honda UK themselves are covering the cost as it’s fully covered by my extended warranty which I bought at the same time as the bike. My local garage only get a small fraction of the money so I see no reason for them to exaggerate wildly.

Happy Sunday - Crutchlow on the front row again, but I’m not expecting a podium..

That will be a crash then....:D

On a side note the Honda in BSB spec is easily as quick as the Dukes but looks a little more fragile in WSB. Bodes well for next year.

Oh well, got the bike back this morning, rode for around 30 mins and the fault came back. Apparently a CANBUS error 103-1 this time so it's back with Honda for them to figure out what is wrong with it. I can't imagine Honda would sanction replacement of the IMU (under warranty) without good reason, so I'm hoping this isn't going to be an annoying intermittent fault - hopefully they can reproduce the fault and have another plan..

I'll keep this thread updated - just in case anyone else experiences a similar problem in future.

It was not the IMU. They can replace your ECU, Dash, SCU, ABS etc and the issue will still occur unless that accidently reseat the plu/connection that is the cause.

It is errant voltage spike/short or similar on the CANBUS causing signal degradation between the ECU, IMU, SCU, ABS, dash board and/or anyone else calling/listening on the bus.

They are going to swap parts until your warranty or patience run out and you sell the bike.

Have they tried re-seating all the devices hanging off the CANBUS?
The dash unit, the ECU, the IMU, the ABS unit (SCU if SP/SP2 model) and all other plugs on the harness?
Have they verified the CAN BUS junction is good and not showing signs of corrosion?

Oh I truly hope this isn't going to be dragged out much longer - I only have 16 months left on my extended warranty... o_O

I personally don’t think it is anything to do with the actual gearbox components inside the engine but more to do with the shift mechanism outside of the gearbox behind the clutch. I think the shift lever return spring and the spring that is on the arm with the bearing on the end that holds the shift drum in gear are too weak and need to be slightly stronger.
I remeber fitting a stronger spring on a GSXR600 i had and it made the shifts much more positive but did make the shift lever very stiff. Wouldn’t want to go to that extreme but something in between i think would solve these issues.
Not sure if anything is available??

I'm running a my2018 sp and the gearbox is definitely the weakest link of the package. I wouldn't go so far to say its a 'weak link' but uts definitely the weakest link if you get my drift.
Every bike ever had has given me missed changes, false neutrals etc but I do get a few more with this bike than the others.
That said its the only one I've had a quick shifter on and if I ignore the quick shifter and go all old fashioned and use the clutch its absolutely fine.
BUT as soon as I revert back to quick shifter I can expect 1 botched change or false neutral about every 50 miles.
I can live with it so not too much of a biggy but could be improved for certain.

So it seems Honda want my dealer to swap out the ECU for a known good one - trouble is the dealer is quite a small one and doesn't have a spare ECU to swap in. So they've trying to get Honda to send a new ECU - which apparently is proving difficult. I'm going to get on to Honda Customer Care directly as this is a ridiculous situation. I must have been without the bike for more than 3 months in total this year. All that time the bike's been depreciating and I'm "enjoying" a CB500F as a daily ride.. Anyone got a spare ECU for a 2017 RA-H complete with lock set I can "borrow".. :)
Will let you know if it turns out to be a faulty ECU - I'd be surprised, but I'm not an expert. Apparently the sensors and wiring / connections have all passed Honda Tech UK's required tests, so maybe it is, or maybe it's one of those annoying faults that only shows after an hour or so of riding.. Either way, I'm not impressed with Honda - and that's after I make allowances for the whole impact of Covid.

I think I'd be going into writing giving them a reasonable time to fix it. Then go down the not fit for purpose route. Citizens advice is your friend. Also check with your household insurer if you have legal cover.....

What an absolute shit show! Utterly embarrassing on Hondas part. People slag off BMW for their reliability but atleast they sort things out properly and promptly!

As often said you can tell a good company by how they handle things when they go wrong, something which big H seems to have forgotten recently.

Apologies for being late to this one. Just to say I had exactly the same problem with my 2018, exact same lights on dash appearing. It was sorted within 30 mins at a dealer - apparently the neg terminal of the battery was loose and causing them to flash then be constant. Ridden a couple of 100 miles since and nothing so presume all well. Mind you I felt a bit of an arse for not finding the source myself considering how simple it was.
