I went for a ride to Newark today, and on the way back this happened. I want speeding by the way, but I do need some new underpants
Easily done. It's their responsibility to look and indicate before they change direction but you can also predict those movements. All takes experience and I bet you will know what to look for the next time!
Wow blink bet that knocked the confidence a bit but main thing is you are ok and dealt with the situation
yeah, i should have realised the queue of traffic was behind that lorry, but I didnt. I was sort of in the filtering mindset, there were cars coming the other way, if i was thinking i was overtaking, id have been further out I did think for a moment after I passed but then thought, nah, just carry on as i was. I might think twice on that road though lol
Dont take any of this as criticism, I have put myself in worse positions and not something I admit with pride but learning from mistakes is a lesson worth absorbing when you are lucky enough to get away with it. Any time you are passing other vehicles you have to be looking for this as just as your clip proves, they wont always look for you. That's something to look for on all roads, filtering or otherwise. Good to see you are still out on the bike at this time of year!
i posted it to see what people thought, so no offence taken. Ill ride as much as i can, its really important to me, I just seem to have acquired a dislike of the rain! Must get myself some waterproof gear
Glad you got away with that @blink, every day is a day in the classroom and no matter how long we’ve been riding there’s always something to learn. All road users have a duty of care, but sadly not everyone puts that into practice. The vast majority of drivers won’t even know you’re there or even bother to check, it’s always good practice to scan well ahead for hazards and try to predict how the pond life is going to react to it. I’m in no way saying that you’re not aware of this, but I always ride my bike assuming I’m invisible and expect someone to have an error of judgment. Stay safe.
Good on you Blink for sticking it up and being prepared to get back good and bad. Its a great example of the freedom and manoeuvrability we have on bikes against the difficultly it is for many cars to overtake, obviously it was the car drivers responsibility to do the old mirror, signal, manoeuvre, which is clear they only performed the last part, or if they did just think about first 2 then they had it in for you And as above, on our part we have great freedom to move through these lines of traffic but are much more vulnerable to injury if it goes tits up. As the biker, the clue was the line of traffic and slow moving vehicle at the head of it, as the distance between you and as it closed the likehood of a car attempting to overtake was increasing massively, and that is exactly what was happening as there was clear air on the opposite lane, so ultimately I would be expecting exactly what happened, good lesson learnt and sure you will take a slightly different approach next time you encounter the same situation. Forward and rearward observation skills are what keep us alive. Ride safe and stay sunny side up mate
Actually, i didn't see the slow vehicle, or at least didn't cotton on to what was happening, guess that's the moral of this story
But so easily done. Even twin headlights on full beam don't always get through to some drivers when they're happily thinking the road is theirs and "Mirror? Wot's a mirror" attitude. I got a white van do the same to me a couple of months ago making me swerve. Just happy the oncoming was a decent distance away.
Often when I had the old Blade with just the one bulb on dipped. Now both come on so not so bad, but certainly when overtaking traffic like in your video clip I'd switch to main beam for the overtake. It's just something I do to try and minimise any of the brain dead not noticing me.
I bet there's been some debates over the years regarding hatched areas with broken white lines. For me, I overtake across them as is allowed but I wouldn't travel in them to overtake streams of cars like that. Not least of all because the surface is terrible if you needed to stop suddenly. I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Personally I think the traffic was going too fast to consider yourself ok to filter close to them like that. I'd have been treating them all as overtakes and giving much more room. I only filter close to cars when traffic is at a standstill or going very slowly, perhaps under 15mph. Also you seem to be narrowing the gap on the car that pulled out on you (at 4-5 seconds in the video)....once the oncoming car has gone past, you then had the full width of the road to give yourself even more space instead of less. Fair play for uploading
Great call Blink, we learn from our mistakes/experiences and goes it shows the usefulness of the helmet cam, it all looks so different at real speed and can look very different in the cold light of day on review.
That happened to me all the time....... Have a look here, somebody just lost a dog on a roundabout....
im gonna chalk it up to an interesting experience anyway, I have only had one dog related experience riding, and thats when one angry rambler was upset i was on a green lane, when she was the only one breaking the rules, by not having her dog on a lead. she also did a ridiculously over dramatic launch into the verge. its like, im on a 125 doing about 10mph in a rut on a lane thats 16ft wide
Saw this post last week........doing my usual rounds on you tube tonight and spotted it’s now part of a “Moto Stars” compilation. Ep 103 . Well done for staying cool.
