Check the kill switch isn’t on or it’s contacts aren’t corroded - a bit of WD40 works wonders

EDIT - forget this as I’ve just realised you say you can hear the pump. So, whilst the kill switch has form for being a bit vulnerable to corrosion, if it was the culprit the pump wouldn’t prime. Sorry for the Red Herring

In what way was the battery checked? Sometimes the battery will appear to be doing it’s job in terms of cranking the engine over at a reasonable speed, but can be just too weak to deliver a good strong spark. It may be worth putting it on charge for a couple of hours then try again.

The cranking speed is very critical on this bike. If your battery has less than 80% capacity, the voltmeter and charger would all says it is ok but it will not run the bike & fire it up.
One way it to put a meter on the battery and check the volts while cranking for 10s or so. The volt should stay around 10.
Or take it to a battery shop & ask them to do a CCA test
I would eliminate the battery first as this is the most commont, easiest & cheapest remedy

+ 1 to what @bonjo said, It was also pretty darn cold yesterday morning, if your battery is old or a little weak there is nothing like a cold snap to kill it off...

When i had the battery checked he said it was at 100% but i think it may be the original battery so it's 14 years old, where is the best place to buy a new one?

Has this problem just occurred after changing the tank or has it been running since?

It started after i changed the tank, but i did'nt run it for long, can smell petrol when i try to start it and the pump is priming i might just bite the bullet and order a new battery and see what happens

    Which blade is it?
My 13 plate and 17 plate had a problem where if I started it and then just left it until the fan came on and then put it away then the next time I tried to start it it would not catch just kept turning over.
A friend recommended getting it to at least 5000 rpm once started so it new it was out of choke mode.
Since doing that i.e.always take it for a short blast it has been OK.
In the end to get mine started I connected the battery to the car battery and whilst turning it over just gave it a little twist of throttle. Eventully it caught and fired up.
    Good luck

14 year old battery, that deserves a medal.

My NC30 was running the original battery I had from my 2010 Blade, and is left on a conditioner all year, and this year would turn the little sewing machine over but would not fire, as soon as it went back on the charger, in no time it was showing 100%, but as soon as a load was on it, it puked itself, new battery and fired immediately.

Well i got it started, lifted the tank hit the starter and it started first time, put the tank back down and it still started so at the moment i have'nt got a clue what happened to make it start but if it carries on starting will be one happy bunny, thanks for all the replies think i might still look into getting new battery as 14 years old might be getting a bit tired

Sounds like you had a fuel line kinked/pinched or an electrical plug wasn’t quite home. As you say if it’s working now then hopefully that’s it sorted. A 14 year old battery that is still serviceable is unbelievable o_O

I've only just change the battery on my Mk4 Golf TDi after nearly 18 years (owned from new), although it's a much bigger beast than on a bike, so 14 years is amazing and definitely wouldn't think of it as money wasted if you've bought a new battery anyway..
