Mine doesnt have ABS but I have jusy been riding all morning, and its been fine.

Then while rolling along at 30 i felt a slight knock as if i had run over a big stone, this happened 3 more times so i knew it wasnt, then i thought the brake lever has gone a bit soft so pulled over and nothing! Had to stop it with my back brake and foot.

Waiting for the AA now. Sometimes the lever is firm but roll the bike backwards, i can feel the brakes binding but then forwards if i brake i can pull it all the way in and keep pushing the bike.

This was moderately alarming. Anyone had this before?

Bizarre. Can you see any physical damage anywhere? Has a pad disintegrated?

    Wheel bearing has collapsed

Its moved over and the right caliper is hitting it jamming the brake on, or off depending on where its drifted to

I just need some new underpants now

I think you were extremely lucky. Good you weren't hurt.

I had a close call yesterday - I was just about to take the motorcycle trailer back to the rental place, and I had an electrical fire under the dash of my VW bus which was towing. Luckily I hadn't left home. If it had happened on the road at speed it could have been a very bad day.

    Happy Easter!

Its all stripped down now, it was pretty mashed up on the bearing that had collapsed. One thing, the spacer tube has sustained some damage on the OD, but I cant see that it does anything, besides space things out. Its this part

Oh, and this is my bearing

Glad you're ok Blink, that sort of event would be of concern to the most experienced rider.

would have been quite different had i run into the back of the vivaro van, which by chance had Lambretta plastered all over it - the owner had eight of them!

Having had a front wheel bearing go on me a couple of years ago I am surprised you did not notice something was not right long before the brake did not work!

How many miles has the bike done?

I think its on 24k. I had just run around the peaks, and, for me at least, been fairly daring. It felt great, and I was feeling really good about it too. The first thing I noticed was when i was just rolling along the road and felt that feeling like i had hit a stone. The AA man said he couldnt feel any bearing noise until he took the calipers off, but with the calipers off, it was obvious. I guess its because only one had collapsed, and the feeling was the ball getting jammed between the tube and wheel. Good job its only aluminium and nothing harder

That looks similar to mine which had done similar miles - they do seem to go quickly when they go - MOT was only a couple of months before, plus a new tyre had been fitted hence bearings checked.
I noticed a slight knock that got to the stage I felt I could go no further after 30 miles on a motorway so went to the next service station where I spotted the problem - got a pic somewhere, will see if I can find it.

MOT was 2 months ago, and about 500 miles

Tyre was done last year, but still i doubt its done 1000 miles since it was taken off at the tyre place, i took the bike in, not just the wheels

I have re-assembled it all now, and I have now realised that the front wheel spacers were on the wrong sides, now that can only have happened when the new tyres were fitted. I wonder if thats been the cause of this.

And getting proof that the tyre fitters were at fault will be nigh on impossible I would imagine.

yep, it just reinforces my complaint that you just cant get a decent job done at all.
