I'm thinking (steady on) with fuel costs being slightly high at the moment and I worked out that it costs me £22 per day for my commute and gym stop off. The fireblade will do it for £10 I did buy a set of two piece leathers for when I ride to town for bits and bobs and for work, and save the one piece for when I go out riding properly at the weekend. It's still a pain in the arse riding to work and I always forget something, usually trousers or sometimes where I'm actually going. Anyway, its not necessarily the most practical bike to commute down the M1 and I'm sure its not the most fuel efficient either. so what do you use yours for, if you commute with a bike, do you have a different one or is my commute a bit on the long side for you? As usual, I'm ruminating hard, so feel free to ramble back at me. Top tips always welcome too
My blade does about 50mpg (probably nothing to brag about) and my Focus 1.6 tdci says on the display 63.8 mpg average, if I went on the motorway for 150 miles on the bike the tyre would start to get a flat spot
my daily car does 20mpg, no matter how I drive it. you are right about flat spots, forgot about it. Think I did that to my first set of tyres, it did not help me learnt to corner!
The price of fuel is definitely having some effect on my decision to go out for a blast or not.I keep telling myself to leave the bike locked up, take the car, save the bike for the track.
100% agree. Saturday morning was a good example for me, I was up early, had fed the dogs and had a brew before 6:30am. It was dry, broken cloud but it was windy, so I was 50/50 as to whether to go for a blast. Normally in a 50/50 I'd have gone out but now the fuel cost is another factor which historically I'd never even think about. Needless to say the bike hasn't moved all weekend. I wonder whether the value of bikes will start to come down if this carries on? Get's a bit harder to justify riding for the sake of riding when you're burning through fuel which is astronomically priced.
I ride regardless of the cost of fuel ,,,,,, I moan about the cost when its for the car , but bike nah . V power or Esso Synergy in both bikes . Only time the bikes stay in the garage is if its raining
Too true @Selmer50mark - people think nothing of spending £100’s on aftermarket led indicators, exhausts, engine mapping, suspension upgrades, latest top of the range helmets etc (which is their individual choice and right) but it’s an expensive paperweight if you don’t ride when you want to.
My bike is my hobby so had 2 fill ups this weekend. As I'm an anti-social git and don't go out socialising very often it is something that gets me out the house. Paid 199.9 per litre for super and it was worth every penny. I can save money elsewhere if I have too.
The cb500f that I use sometimes ,,,does 86mpg ideal for back lanes or broads to work...car is 32mpg and R1m 29mpg ....did 35quid this wkend in that just faffing about but loved every min....just cancelled Sky that was 100 a month ....
I dont mind fulling the bike at all, it is all fun, was just sort of curious about people using a fireblade as a commuter bike. I'm gonna use it tomorrow, got my rucksack ready to go im probably more upset about the car doing 21mpg, costing me over 6k just to go to work
Sounds more like you need to change the car. Personally I found commuting on a bike took away some of my enjoyment from fun rides.
I probably need another car. Neither of us want to get rid of it so i guess its a small electric car i need. Shame there isn't something like a Z3 electric
Lol I always recognise your lid first We were saying that the roads around the Peaks seemed quieter than usual, not as many tourists bimbling around presumably the fuel issue....so that's one good thing to come out of the situation
It wasnt bad, i went round grindleford and castleton way. I think cyclists have got worse, twice they were in a group overtaking each other using both sides of the road making it impossible to pass safely
