Under heavy & sudden breaking from high speeds, I feel a strong judder/ vibrations through the handle bar between 60~40 mph. More gentle braking does not produce the judder. Not there outside that speed range. Is this warped discs? For replacement, I can do either OEM or brembo equivalent. Any opinion of which one? thanks
Assuming it's on track then it could be the pads resonating, in which case try a different set. It's also worth checking the front wheel balancing, but if you suspect the discs and they are not too worn too then you can send them away to be checked. https://motoliner.com/disk-straightening/
I replaced mine with pfm, top quality discs and similar cost to high end brembo, Isle of Man made so local ish instead of the hassle sometime associated with delivery from Europe
thanks no track use just fast road. Bike has done 23k on original disc (next to no wear) and pads (1/2 worn) I will make contact with the maidstone company
Try cleaning the bobbins, put a nut and bolt through and lightly tighten then turn the bobbin while cleaning out with brake cleaner, scrub the disc face with scotchbrite and brake cleaner as well to remove any built up pad residue.
I do this once a year as part of maintenance. It is not very problematic as it happens only under strong & sudden brake application. I'll live with it until the front wheel comes off for a tyre change, then send them away for checking
Time to change the front tyre. So I have decided to take the wheel and then the discs off to send them to the straightener for assessment. Would anyone know the tightening toque for the disc bolts (2x6) as I cannot see it in the workshop manual. The also seem to have red loctite on them. Would appreciate the info
Hello Bonjo Torque on my 2014 is 20Nm front disc bolts. The discs on mine were warped at 17000 miles which I found disappointing on such a bike. In the past I've never replaced front discs before 50K on other bikes. Bought Brembo Series Oro front and back and am pleased with the performance, though I don't do tracks. Here in Spain the fronts cost me 462 euros, probably more in UK.
Thanks for the info. I will see the outcome of the disc assessment. Could be the problem is elsewhere. Brembo’s are ridiculously pricey and beyond my budget.
Probably worth inspecting the callipers whilst your at it, check everything is in order. Seals, pistons and pins.
I am not sure about sticky brakes. The MOT tester put it on the roiling road & showed me the meter fluctuation when the brakes were applied and said definitely discs after I asked about caliper/ pads. I am going to make the most of the good weather and take the wheel off next week
an update to my brake judder problem: The time came to fit a new front tyre. I took the wheel off, removed the discs and sent them away for checks & straightening. It cost just under £80 all in, came back within 3 days. Cleaned the calipers, replaced the original pads (@23.6k) with brembo OEM equivalent all fitted. 400 miles so far with the first 200 taking it easy on the brakes. The judder has gone and I feel a world of difference; I am still tensing up for judder when braking hard (after many years of having it), hopefully this will disappear in time. thanks muffkin for the info
