Hi guys! I'm in love with the SC59, so I decided to buy it as my second bike. I'm currently owning a CB1000R '18, so yeah... again, Honda. I've checked multiple Facebook groups, YouTube videos, etc., about the SC59 and what I should look for or avoid. After doing my research, I decided to go for a 2012+ model (I also like it more because the front has been slightly updated). I found one listed near me a 2012 SC59 model with 34,000 km. The owner seems to be really honest about the maintenance (suspension, spark plugs, chain, tires, brake pads and other stuff). The bike also has a quick shifter. I've read that most of the issues from the '08-'11 models have been addressed in the '12 model, but there are still some issues with the gearbox (3rd gear?). Is that something I should be worried about? The bike has not been used on a track, for wheelies, etc.—just normal (but fast) riding. I would really appreciate any suggestions or questions I should ask the seller. Cheers, guys!!
welcome to the forum, I can't help you with gearbox issues but I'm sure someone will be able to help.
Welcome to the forum! I have a 2012 SC59 and I chose this one over the MY 2008-2011 probably for the same reasons you did. Apart from the infamous third gear, the camshaft position (CMP) sensor can also be an issue. If the CMP sensor fails, the engine won't start and that's it. Third gear failure has more to do with how the previous owner(s) treated the gearbox. And the quality of the quickshifter, plus the kill time and other settings will also affect the gearbox. You could ask if any work has been done to the engine. Honda uses black sealant for the crankcase, so if you see another colour sealant or black sealant in large amounts, the engine has been split. One more thing, something I found out after I went off-road with my bike, the dashboard shatters faster than a champagne glass, is quite rare and bloody expensive Good luck
A lot of people believe 3rd gear failure is more likely with a quick shifter. Could be the shifter or how it encourages people to ride it. Crank problems fixed under warranty generally happens within the first 15000 miles. If it gets to 15000 miles it’s probably not going to fail.
I believe the majority of crank problems were affecting the MY 2008-2009 In 2010 they fixed that problem and also made the crank a bit stronger/heavier From 2012 onwards, again they made a new crank shaft and this one stayed the same until MY 2016 If the crank shaft would need to be replaced in a MY 2010-2011, it will get same the crank as the MY 2012-2016 But you're right, if it didn't fail in the first 15000 miles, it was probably not going to
