I have seen a couple of these now and I am considering getting a caravan to convert so I can put my bike in as well so I have the best of both worlds. I am fully aware of the possible over weight loading issues for the axle on the caravan and this is something I will look at and maybe would need to get a twin axle .i already have a caravan but it's too good to start chopping up and you can pick them up really cheap anyway . Does anyone know anyone that has one for sale or who has converted one as if I let rip with a 9" angle grinder it will be a fecking convertible by the time I have finished . I can't justify getting a van just for trackdays/racing so looking at this option Cheers
Yo should be able to find loads about. few local scrappys have these laying about. as long as they have a good chassis and bodywork that won't fall to bit why not start on Ebay Touring Caravan Abbey GT 4 berth, sleeps 4, Four Berth | eBay AVONDALE MAYFAIR 4 5 BERTH 1993 TOURING CARAVAN IDEAL STARTER VAN NEEDS TLC | eBay Abi Ace Diplomat 2 Berth Touring Caravan 12ft Lightweight | eBay I do like the idea. cheaper than a van, keep a bed in there. got as sink and kettle and room for a bike or 2 if you rip half the van out
Caravan axle is well strong enough to take weight of a bike bud it's the strongest part on them . I had a Ducato LWB van 2 bikes in back then had a caravan and got a Millie in that and just lent it up against seats towed perfectly to Anglesey cadwell nightmare to get through that little door though ha ha . The more the bike is over the axle the better I'd say .
you can find alot of them in holland. make sure its got a rear center window that opens, then just grind the feck out of it to you see something like a doorway... hahahhaha have a look at this ( Motor-Forum - ZAC/OW-cup Gezocht & Gevonden - Race Caravan te koop ), he'll take any offer and I'll bring it to cadwell if you pay for the train ticket .... not a bad deal I'd say, wouldn't cost you more than 150£ to be delivered, and a few beers of coarse all you would need to do is put a numberplate from your car on it and your fine, only ways 300kg's
I dont know where abouts in the uk you are but im just out side leeds and happy to help , i worked in the caravan industry for over ten years in dealership and then a couple of years on my own doing mobile service . stripping out is easy but you do have to brace up correctly so the van is good to tow . their is no rocket science at all , it all depends on what van you look at and how you want it to be once done ie how many to sleep loo kitchen intact ect , evil bay is sometimes worth a look but most cheap vans are a damp mess best way to get one is from a caravan breakers . Their are quiet a few about . please feel free to ask any questions that may crop up im happy to help .
Found this picture on google which is pretty much what skippy mentioned i think just need to find the right layout as I guess it's what I am willing to loose to make room for the bike.
Would not take much to do that you could keep it pretty much caravan if you slept down the other end top end is usually couple of seats and a table in middle which looks still there in that one .
Jason - see what Glossop caravans have got - they have boat loads of the things for sale new so must get trade in's etc.
I saw one on eBay a few months back and the rear was strengthened and the lot folded down and acted as a ramp. Would love to do this as could take bike on holiday too
Caravan should be well capable of carrying a bike, just need to make sure you have approx 75Kg pressing down on the towball when it's fully loaded. If bike engine is above axles then you are pretty much sorted. Good thread this mate as I'm thinking of coverting a minibus to a campervan and carrying a bike INSIDE.
We are in talks on buying 5 2010 relay van ambulances nothing wrong with them just decommissioned I will be keeping 1 they have a built in ramp In the floor fully plastic lined swivel single seats rear loweres to floor level . Just gotta persuade them to let us not give them a COD the last 2 masters had to be broke crying shame
Looks good mate. The minibus I,m looking at is also an ex NHS Renault master, 2.2 dci, with a built in ramp, air suspension and 12' long loading/living area.
Has the floor delamed , as in is it all wobbly , if so its an easy fix ill be happy to tell you what you need to do to sort it .
What I like about using a caravan is when it's not in use it's not costing you anything. No insurance (unsure if that really legal, May need to be added to car insurance that you may tow). my caravan is insuraned but not a cheap one. No Mot needed, service etc.... just ensuring it's safe to use on the road.
Oh god i sound like a right nobber but i would strongly advise that if you plan on using the gas system you get it checked once a year even if it hasnt moved they spring up leaks for fun also a quick look over the tyres is always wise most vans go over due to a blow out from old rubber . the hitch head should have some grease nipples behind it give them a good dose and thats it for a quick going over and all should be good , ill get my coat and go sit in the corner and stop banging on like an old giffer . sod it . if any of you lads have a caravan and want it looking at or have a problem in or around leeds huddersfield area send us a message .
It's well bouncy. The floor was wet and the top layer has started to crumble Away near the door. The rest I have a heater in there drying it out I hope. The underneath is just damp wood mate My plan was to vanish inside and Iv got a load of checker plate metal sheets to go over the top Sound good ?
If you use a delam kit you wont need the plate , cut out the damp section by the door and fill with board and brace underneth . to use the delam kit you will need to take the carpet up and drill some holes in the floor drill bit size wants to be large say at least big enough to fit your thumb in . drill through top layer of wood and through all the insulation untill you reach the bottom layer of wood . if you go all the way through by mistake just put a repair patch on underneeth and seal it round with silicone to the underside of the floor. hoover out all the holes their will be a fair amount of insulation loose . make sure you drill the holes in a pattern say three side by side then two above then three again about half a foot between each row. now mix your delam kit together and pour in the holes starting at the front and working back . when you have some in each to the top place batterns the full length of the floor between the holes and screw down through both layers . glue will now spread everywhere . use a spreader to make sure all holes are filed and scoop up as much as you can into a waste container. the glue will start to set and froth up . it will get hot too . make sure van has windows open , it stinks . when every hole is full and slightly over throwing with a frothy top close windows and leave overnight or more . when you go back floor will be solid , take up batterns and use a mallet and chisel or a angle grinder to make hole tops flush and any glue runs you have on floor . you can use body filler fo fill and dips if you need too. hoover up and put carpet back down. your good to go . floor is stronger now than when van left the factory . delam kits are about £50.00 i think its been a while since i bought one. i have done hundreds of these and people are amazed at the results . good luck .
