My lad wants a top notch gaming pc for Christmas. I've already bought him a 28 widescreen monitor, razor keyboard and mouse, so just need a tower.

What specs do i need? ( i don't know whether to build him one, or order one fully built)

Any information and maybe links would be gratefully received.

    Cheers.

Build it around the graphics card, you could pic a motherboard with more than one GUI slot so you can run two cards or more in SLI mode, checkout Novatech.co.uk for bear bones or pre built PCs, I have been using them for twenty years or more, it's never ending now Si with GUIs up to 2,500.00 each and you could run four of them with 96GB of Ram, one I was top of my game with big systems but that's well and truly in the past with so e of the systems I know people own now! monster gaming rigs, I only have one for my graphics. lol

I have a budget of £1k mate.... I think the one you specd is a shed load more. LOL.

I promised him a good pc as Emily had a macbook pro last year so, you can't give one without the other.... kids eh?

    I've also bought him these:

    SoundSticks III - Home

As he usually used headphones, but wanted the soundsticks for music listening (they are surprisingly ok for that), so a 7.1 GC may not be needed.

A quick pic list from Novatech, you'd want to check no compat issues with it but still a nice PC, if you want to spend the whole grand up the CPU to an i7 and maybe add some more ram :)

Others may have a better idea but later on I'd be adding another GPU and some more ram for a killer system..

That board has two GUI/graphics card slot yes, he could add another matching card later on for better performance, tbh some of the card now RIP on there own but two is better still, its poss to get mother boards that run 4! GREAT if DAD is BUYING...lol

He's needs to check the optical drive is supported if not then ask NovaT if they have one for SATA3, like you I am a little behind the times with builds now but have an idea still ;) :)

I'd defo go with building one to your specific budget/needs.

Brands like Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte are good quality brands for you're motherboard choices.

If it's a gaming PC then you'd could spend anything up to £800 on the GFX card alone.

Decide on a CPU first. AMD or Intel. Then you can pick a motherboard to suit.

I currently have a MSI GD-65 with an intel 4770k. If your not into overclocking then i'd maybe go for an i5 4440 and a middle spec motherboard and RAM. This allows you to put more money into the GFX card.

Whats the spec on the monitor. What resolution will he be playing at?

Just checked based on the review re SATA3 only board, not sure what the guy is on as it should backwards compat to SATA disc's, Id ignor it but worth an ask I guess.

    Nice display that.

Could do with a few more...Dad....lol

I spent £1500 on a stack from PC Specialist and found it to be a good service. They even have pre-configured bundles for a set price which you can then modify for better/cheaper depending on needs :)

    Nice monitor BTW

What games will he be playing? the usual COD stuff?

As far as running SLI and the likes, I personally wouldn't bother as the tests currently show only about 3 to 5 FPS difference between dual SLI and good quality single cards. Unless you plan on bolting 2 GeForce Titans together at a price of nearly 5k.

This is a top class card, and will happily run games maxed out at the resolutions you're after.

I have no idea these days lol. He wanted that monitor and the razor stuff and soundsticks. I bought them earlier on and he's using it now, as part of his Birthday/xmas pressies.

He's got a laptop at mo, and running dual screen with it...but badly wants a gaming pc....tha'll be his xmas opening present.

I guess i can go to £1,200 MAX on it..that's it. Too much choice and my brains haddled...LOL. Not interested in overclocking etc...just want it to work out the box as is, with the option of him upgrading/overclocking. That's his bag...he's tech mad... gets it from me.

How about basing it around this:

Just built a pc for my son and it is similar spec to what Arthur suggested, cost around £850 with a 24" Ilyama screen, quality case and led lights etc.. Got it from Scan computers. I checked around and they worked out the cheapest. They have a daily deals page and you can pick items from that which drops the price a little. Delivered next day as well.

Nice card that, as I said too SLI is just an option but its nice to have a main board to run two, my advice is always spend as much as you can and spec the best card poss for your money, like I said to Si all the high end cards RIP so not so much an issue to just have one, I run two SLI cards and tbh they have there place in gaming that's it and the speeds are minimal over a good single card (however SLI is still very poular with hard core gamers and motherboard manufactures provide a good number of boards with 2,3 and 4 slots), most graphics programs etc stand to gain little/nothing with SLI like PS as not written to take advantage of it, high end single cards have so much power now its untrue but still SLI comes up time and time again.
