Just changed the chain and sprockets for a 520 conversion. Noticed that when I removed the front sprocket cover (that I just modified - but more about that later), the front sprocket bolt was tight on the shaft, but the shaft has about 1mm of play back and fore.. should I be worried?? Video posted in a few mins..
While I'm waiting an age for the video to upload to youtube, a pic of the front sprocket cover - cut a big hole in it so the sprocket shows through! God those 520 chains are thin, about 70% of the standard chain I had on.. hope its strong enough lol
Really.. I'm thinking that there is a bearing worn with that movement.. good to hear you've seen it before though.
Imagine it's so the sprocket can move ever so slightly to align itself with the chain and the back sprocket ?
What's the advantage of a 520 chain instead of a 530? Surely it'll be weaker and more likely to snap.
well I guess you could say its more likely to snap "if not looked after".. I'm no expert, nor racer, but racing bikes use 520 chains as they are thinner, lighter, so less mass to move therefore easier to spin up. I bought it because I wanted to try one really.. no other reason
Finally remembered to have that tug for you Doesnt have any in out movement from what I can tell.. Does have a tiny bit of side to side as the sprocket moves on the spline a tad.
Can you post up if the 520 chain feels better or different to what you've had on previously? I'm curious as if it feels significantly better I might try one on my next chain/sprocket swap.
Mines a race bike. For sure a 520 wont live aslong as a 530 or 525, ive had 3 fitted in a year and thats lubed every time the bike comes out. As said above though its less weight and because the chain rotates as such speed, that weight is magnified so it makes a worthwhile difference when all you care about is speed. Also most race gear is 520 so very easy to get sprockets and chains. Looks a bit better imo but its purely a performance thing. I bought the bike already with 520 (never ran anything else) so cant compare sorry Some random pics for the craic
well the only difference i can tell so far is that the rear wheel on the stand spins like there is no chain! with the bigger chain there was some resistance..
