Afternoon all. Been having a bit of a wrestling match with my RR4 whilst changing the chain and sprockets (didn't know that the clutch release mechanism was attached to the front sprocket and needed to be removed ). Anyway it's all back together but I've a question. How much rivet peen do people generally do. I'm using an AFAM chain and after the bit of peening I've done the rivet heads are around 5.25 mm. Does anyone have any advice on how far you're supposed to flare them?
This is one of those jobs that you can easily spend more time thinking about than is necessary. I had mine opened up by my local bike garage as I didn't have the right tool, but most importantly I measured the width of the link with a calliper gauge to make sure it was the same as the others so it's not too loose & not too tight.
looks good, but to be sure if you take a pic from an angle then it might be easy to check that the rivets fan out ok.
Looks great. You don't need hardly any peening. Look how difficult it is to get the sideplate onto the pin? I usually finish off with a ballpein hammer anyway.
Rich No issues with that mate. The most important thing is to get the setting tool square and make sure there are no cracks in the rivet head when flared. The stress on the joint is in line with the chain travel, not side to side, so all you are doing by flaring is stopping the rivet coming loose.
I noticed that when I put the picture up It was already on there. Someone at the factory didn't do a very good job.
