Is it AA or AAA? I've got a datatool 2 fitted to the blade and it's draining the battery quickly so think I may need a new one soon. Do I go bigger Ah and what makes does everyone recommend Tia Lee
Get rid of the datatool! Unless you absolutely need it Might be worth going lithium route as most offer more cranking amps that lead acid batteries
I’ve just gone for a new lithium battery and charger https://www.1000rr.co.uk/threads/new-lithium-battery-and-charger.36801/#post-482744
if you have constant drain on your battery, then lithium is the wrong direction to take as their ah is less than 1/2 of your AGM battery. I think shorai sells one which comes close to the AGM ah rating. Batteries suffer from capacity fade as they age. You may find getting another new AGM will solve your problem. Unless you have the space, going bigger on AGM means bigger size & heavier article. I assume there are no hidden issues with either your data tool or the bike's parasitic drain
had an unlce who had one fitted. his doc said even if he kicks the bucket, his heart will carry on beating!
gutted if this is true I done a lot of reading and I have just brought a motobatt now you have me worried
I’ve got a motobatt, been on for 12 months and zero issues. Changed oil last week, started it up after 4 months of standing and it fired on the first press. Thumbs up from me.
when I had the vtr I used to use one of these solar chargers https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Solar-Char...Power-Shop/1037695772?iid=132315095906&chn=ps and never had a problem with the battery for 6 years and after the winter the storm would turn over a lot before firing up and this used to kepp the battery tip top and turn the storm over and over and over
Regarding the Mottobat I bought 2 at the same time, one for me and one for my brother. My battery leaked after about a month and my brother’s leaked a couple of months later, both from the seal at the top. I ground a little channel round the seal with a dremel and filled it with epoxy glue, been fine ever since. Maybe a bad batch, but it would put me off buying another. The real problem is if drips onto the swing arm and is left unchecked it could easily damage the surface. It’s still going strong though after 2 years.
Shorei actually list 2 batteries a higher capacity one (£200?) which i in your pic. a good few don't even specify the ah (because it is too low) arguing that it is not relevant because this is a lead battery spec. However if you have current draw when your bike is off, then the ah become important. Checl out skyrich, shido (2.4ah), jml etc CCA is actually specified at 0F (-18C you can find the proper testing info on line) and again the lithium makers specify theirs at room temperature (think somewhere between 15~20C) as their product will not operate at those temps. Although alian do mention cold temp performance. So on both counts the makers provide numbers and marketting claims which is not correct (honest?). To me, lithium battery is a great substitute provided you are aware of its pitfalls and how it suits the your bike's use
I’ve just got a lithium and to be honest I’m not to impressed with it as all he numbers are better than the original acid battery but it doesn’t seem as strong on the starter button
Interesting deduction @raphael . I am sure you wouldn't buy a crap product so the difference must have been quite noticeable. As a point of interest, I ran my SP (std lithium batt) last week for the first time since October. The batt is on permanent tender. The bike started instantly as if it hadn't been laid up at all. I was actually surprised. I don't notice any diff in starting between my 2011 (ordinary batt) and 2018. This does make me wonder whether your new battery was fully charged when you installed it - though I do believe you would be right on top of that.
Had 3 Motobatt's and never had a problem, not ride for a while and never charged always starts first time, if you don't want the fire worry of a lithium get a AGM battery they are great
Same as my experience, if you're a hard core commuter lithium may not be the best option. They suffer badly in cold weather. Anyone that uses LI for other things such as RC models, air soft, drone etc will know they are super fussy on charge and storage voltage. TBH the stator and RR cant provide the amps/voltage to ensure battery longevity. Tried all the cheaper AGMs too no name ebay special motto batt etc but keep on going back to Yuasa
cheers Jon, glad it wasn’t just me, it’s a shame I will have to go back to the normal battery as the space the lithium creates is handy.
