Looking to get one for occasional DIY use.

I want it to do heat shrink tubing and the odd paint stripping and plumbing or undoing stuck nuts& bolts

    Seen 2000w hair drier style @ £15~18 and a mini one (300w only) @ £11

What do you guys use and have any recommendation on what to look for?

    thanks
PS some have what I call knuckle bumper. Is it necessary?

Personally i wouldn't use my heat gun on shrink wrap, it gets mental hot. I use wife's hair drier for that.

Mine is a £15 eBay job 2000w and been fine for a few years.

Be careful near paint. Rule of thumb, if it's too hot for your hand, it's to hot for the paint.

I was talking about electrical shrink tubing you put on cables & connectors. At the moment I use matches:eek:

TBH for that kind of stuff you can get away with a lighter, although I use the exhaust hole on a gas soldering iron.

Yes. There is a folding bit of metal at the base if the handle, use that to support it.

Works fine, I use lowest heat and keep moving it. Better than using the butane soldering iron that I sometimes use :p

    Thanks guys,
I'll go with silverline it seems to do what I want and good price (15£)
the wagner also looks good but much more expensive
buying a wife in order to use her hair drier is not an option for me and far too expensive & troublesome:)

The return policy on those is simply terrible. No customer support either.

We have a Black & Decker KX1650 we use daily at work on shrink wrap and other items, just a quick flash over at low temp and job done, been used for years without issues.

Doubles up as a t shirt dryer, glove drier and dribble dryer for one of the old guys as well.
