The 1078 first came out in 2008, the 1090RR in 2010, but there were some 1078's around unsold for a few years after the 1090RR came out.
Do a check on the comparison sites, Virgin's own network does not reach everywhere, but should give you a higher speed if it is available to you....

Check the level of the brake fluid, it sounds like it may be a little high causing the bind.
Is the bike level, or do you have the rear raised with a paddock stand? With only 3l to play with it does not take much to show it a little low.
