Edited it Peter, found the diagram suggests a Multi point switch so it will be cast for it so the bottom end will be slightly different on the 2012.
I don't have a diagram to hand, can't see why they would use a potentiometer over a muti position switch? See here...
As far as I know the gear indicator is impossible as it's a mechanical switch in the gear box, HM dash is your best bet other features work fine.

You can run just the tube, the housing for the OEM tube is wider to accommodate the wider OEM tube, however you can as you say fit the narrow HRC...
