    I would normally say cupping....however, as petanque is French.....I would go for a firm grip...given their tendency to want to roll backwards

    No absolutely nothing...if it's a quality shifter and set up right it's as smooth as can be :) Go test ride one with one on ;)

    No..just tap the shifter..saves your hand and takes you up thru the gears at warp speed :)...makes it sounds stonking too :D
