2017 ECU Remap

    That's the advantage of fly by wire, it can be made to respond any way you want. If you want a 10% throttle movement to equate to fully open you can. It's just a table of numbers. Hopefully the software would stop you doing anything silly but in theory anything is possible.

    I had my 2017 remapped a couple months ago using the woolich softare.

    Definitely a change in the throttle response and overall characteristic of the bike. Much smoother and better midrange power with a screaming top end. Quickshifer is lovely, although it needs a bit of tweaking to smoothen out the up shifts.

    I have attached below the Dyno graph. The bike has had a full Akra ti system + MWR high efficiency filters fitted.

    I am naïve on electronics. Can the dealer software make such changes/adjustments, or is a specialised program required. (I really must convince myself that the days of points, carbs and cables will not return:()

    BSD use the Woolich racing software as mentioned by @Hashlak. I don't know what the dealer software, if any, is capable of. I saw the throttle maps on the Woolich software and they are just a table of numbers. For a given throttle postion and engine speed there is effectively a multiplier that is applied to create the actual throttle response. By changing the numbers you change the throttle response. If you want a Quick Action throttle you could translate 50% at the wrist to 100% at the engine, for example.

    Having considered the graph more carefully and compared it to @Hashlak's I think what it is showing is the before and after. That is, the before is as it was when I arrived with the baffle in and the after is after the remap with the baffle out. I can't believe a baffle makes 22hp difference but 4 less than @Hashlak's before graph seems plausible, as does the extra 10hp he gets for a straight through exhaust with no cat.

    Yep thats right. On the graph I posted above it shows the before and after.

    So the first time we put her on the dyno the bike was fully stock. Second time it had all of the mods on (Akra full system without baffle) and was tuned.

    I have a full system and mwr filter going in this week, not sure on tuners here in Northern Ireland or what they work with. Has anyone had a power commander fitted or is the Woolich software basically a write over the top of standard ecu?

    The Woolich software writes over the firmware in the ECU. Having had my 2017 remapped by BSD Performance last week I would heartily recommend getting it done. The throttle response is much smoother, the fuelling is more even in the low to mid range and there is more power and torque. I'm struggling to see a downside other than the price.

    This really concerns me that owners of 2017-18 bikes are spending good money to not necessarily improve performance but to 'smooth it out'. This surely is something a Honda dealer should be equipped to perform, and not at a cost of 300 quid plus.

    Fuelling my rage on this point is that this week I asked my dealer to fix a fuelling 'stutter' at idle (RR4). Because the bike is fitted with a Power Commander 3 (despite it having standard exhaust) they claim to not be able to do it, and so referred my to a dyno specialist. My present train of thought is to get the Power Commander removed and then get the dealer to fix with their software.

    My question arises: Does a standard bike ridden in a reasonably docile manner really benefit from a Power Commander?

    The stock bike wasn't bad but fitting a new end can and removing the exhaust servo made it worse, I think. I could have lived with it but was intrigued to see if the claims made by the ECU remappers were true. The usual argument is that the manufacturers are forced to compromise on how the bikes are set up to meet various emissions and other regulations. Freed of those restrictions an ECU remap can realise the bike's true potential. I'm pleased with the results. Remapping the ECU can do much more than alter the fuelling, which is why it is becoming the preferred option.

    I'm sure the dealers could be equipped to do similar job. I understand Triumph offer revised maps for some of their bikes but I doubt whether it is free.

    What way does the woolich work with warranty?

    Excellent point (as always) @dgr regarding Euro regs etc. Obviously a re-map will bypass such 'overgoverning'. I didn't factor this into my reckoning.

    I will make an appointment with http://www.roadandraceperformance.co.uk/dyno.aspx (who have done my suspension) for my RR4. If I am pleased with the results I may well 'invest' in getting my 2011 done also.

    Power commander is terrible compared to a proper tune on Woolich or ECU flash.

    Not sure how it works in the UK but here in the UAE you lose warranty if you use Woolich or flash the ECU.

    I hope R&R do a good job for you. I had my suspension set up by them too but ended up dialling out their changes and setting it up myself. They didn't set the preload to my weight, which I found surprising so I just followed an article I found on the internet and did it myself. I'm happier with it now as it suits the roads I ride on and my sedate riding style.

    That is more than interesting to me, because a few months ago after having my suspension done there, I was surprised at that VERY point, even having quite a large dialog with @dainesefreak . Whilst my suspension improved, I am not sensitive enough to suspension to know whether it was truly crap BEFORE and the reset just made it better, or whether it might have just been returned to standard. Logic would tell all of us on here that if suspension is to be set up properly, it must be attuned to the rider's weight and for a track rider his riding style would have top be considered also.

    Back to the ECU topic, I feel like purchasing software to load into a dedicated laptop, but I suspect the learning curve might be too great for a guy more familiar with points and advance/retard than all the mapping paraphernalia.:(

    I felt comfortable making changes to the suspension, I don't think you can go too far wrong if you make gradual changes to one parameter at a time. I wouldn't mess with the ECU though. I felt I could trust Mark at BSD. He didn't make any grand claims and listened to what I wanted from the remap. If you want to judge the results of the remap for yourself by comparing your SP2 to my 2017 let me know and we can sort something out.

    Just had to join up and ask a question as i have what i can describe as a flat spot at just over 2k as i pull away and also get a little jerky throttle response under 3k,ive got used to it but intending to get ecu flash at some point ,so hoping the ecu flash sorts this out as i have replaced end can and obviously this removes valve.

    Hi Wevsky, and welcome.

    It is almost 'luck of the draw' as to who suffers after changing end cans and who doesn't. A few on here have changed 2017 - 18 end cans (Yoshi and Racefit) with no adverse fuelling at all, whereas a couple of others have suffered similar to you. I've left mine standard so can't contribute to the dilemma!

    Thank you for the reply mate,its nto a major thing,but you can tell from tickover it's just not quite right,absolutely fine over 2.5k and with the addition of the quickshifter i added recently its a total blast,ecu flash it seems from what im reading may smooth it out
