Hi, how does one transfer the data from one computer to another? My mate is scraping his old desktop and wants to put the info/data on his new desktop. I suggested a pen drive. Apparently there are other ways; without removing the old hard drive. Do some computer god know a method? Thanks.

    Does it have networking?

    Is it Apple?

If the answers are yes and no then it is simple to copy the data, but more difficult to copy app and settings.

Pen drive/USB stick is the easiest. However, any programs that are on the laptop can't be transferred unless he has a specific transfer program. Some are downloadable free, but we all know the risk with free stuff from the net! I thought Microsoft also had a transfer tool in its suite of programs.

I did exactly this in 2016, but fortunately had most of the installation discs for my other programs. Anything your friend doesn't have, the original software supplier should give him a download code if he can prove evidence of purchase.

A possible solution might be to pay a local computer wiz to come to his house and do something with the hand- drives. Any ideas?

If both have a network card you can get a crossover cable and connect them together. If the have a broadband router/modem which has network ports, most do, you can connect them both to that.

Both can be connected with a cable and make a local network between them and drop all the data. Pretty fast.

Depends how much data there is to move.
You can get 1TB usb flash drives these days...wouldn’t take too long to copy to a flash drive then he’d have a backup once copied to the new computer.

Also, no network!? What’s the PC for? ...this ain’t the 80’s

He has phoned a computer guy (local) who will no doubt sort it. Apparently, between £40 and £80.

Another option is register an email address with Google, Microsoft, Yahoo etc and make use of the cloud drive facility - again dependant on size of data to be transferred.

It really is a simple task not something I'd be prepared to pay someone up to £80 for

If they both connect to the Internet they are both networked and could be set to talk to each other.
