I would highly recommend you install a relay and use that to put power to your grips. The problem with just tapping into existing systems is that they have been fitted to the bike to withstand a known power draw like all the lights and headlamps on the bike going through a 20amp fuse and wiring thickness capable of handling 20amps without issues but adding another device that could draw another 5 amps can cause excess heat build up in the wiring possibly causing fires before the fuse pops up front! A relay only requires a very small current to turn the relay on so poses very little risk from taping into existing wiring.
Thank you mate... You are a true gent... Gonna have to find somewhere to bolt the fire extinguisher for now tho...
Love the little smiley on the battery Art I was just thinking perhaps get some heated grips on mine then read all this and decided against it..

Right... My paranoia needed quashing so i cornered an auto electrician at a local garage and run what I've done passed him to see if i was in danger of blowing up, and he said what i have done is fine... Even commented on how neat it was
The number of times I used to dig vehicle electricians out of the doo-doos by fixing their mistakes, or covering it up is quite scarey
It's a known fact that all auto-electricians are in cahoots with bike dismantlers. They get a kick back for every one that explodes. Mike. Except ones on this forum! Mike.
All I will add is that my r and g heated grips wired to brake lamp worked for 70,000 miles and still work 100% now I understand reason or need for a relay but not sure necessary
You don't need the relay, I only add it as I like the system to fully power down when the ignition is off Plus I also run my sat nav feed and any other aux power from same 20a relay
Datatool! Had 'em on the bike for two winters. They is neat, they is HOT and they turns off with the ignition. Niiiiice.
I've got a Datatool set ready to fit mate. They're fatter than the genuine Honda ones but a quarter the price.
