*Most* car salespeople are full of it mate. Had a few instances myself over the years, once me and my misses bought a brand new fiat 500x (don’t judge me), second car we had bought brand new from this particular dealer in 2 years. Ordered it to the spec we wanted and I said I didn’t want it until March for the new reg (ordered December), once it came in they sat on the car for 3 weeks then sent the misses a picture of it. She immediately noticed the interior was the wrong colour! Told the salesman and made an arrangement to come and view the car to see if she still liked it with the unwanted colour interior. when we got there we were met by the manager who blamed us for the error and tried to sell that there was no option for seat colours, that it was our fault it was wrong as we didn’t speak to the right salesman when we placed our order, that had I have taken the car when they received it they could have ordered a new one for the new reg, etc etc etc, absolutely abhorrent excuses. I asked what discount they were going to give us as the car wasn’t to spec, was told they only make £200 on a new car (complete lies). All I was after was a £300 discount for the inconvenience and a 2 year service plan. Anyway after this I said I’ll leave the car as they hadn’t fulfilled the contract as the car was not as ordered so I would go somewhere else and order a new one that day. next morning get a phone call from a salesman, would you accept the car if we took £2.5k off of it - ps my manager is a dickhead. took the car, had it 18 months and hated it point is, they can lower the price; it’s all risk, how much you want the car, and whether you’re prepared to be patient and risk losing it for a discount.
Also; the “someone else is interested” is most likely complete rubbish. my dad had an instance at a ford dealer when looking at a focus for my mum. He’s looking round a car after doing some research on that particular car, salesman comes running out “I’ve got someone on the phone who wants to put a deposit on this car right now, if you want it I’ll sell to you first but you’d need to put a deposit on it now” my old man said, if you’ve got a person on the phone who wants this car, my advice would be to sell it to them lol. Dealer then says “well you don’t want to miss out on this car it has X,Y,Z and is a rare colour etc etc etc” dad said It’s a focus mate, millions about. And walked away to buy another at a garage a few miles away, original dealer still had the focus 2 months later
Well said @mk3golfcab Car buying is one of my least favourite things I ever do. I absolutely hate LR franchises and often sit and bite my tongue. I did get a decent deal on my DS eventually but it was bloody hard work. They rely more on people grabbing PCP deals now where they take a load of commission from the finance and the poor customer is bamboozled with jargon, hidden terms and a low monthly repayment so they don't appreciate the actual costs till they come to the end of the term. Being a cash buyer is much harder than it used to be but we still retain the one thing the car salesman is unable to fight against. Freedom of choice!
Just to put this out there, my misses worked for Kia for a short time back in 2016, I decided (not long after buying the 500x above) that I wanted a fresh car. Ended up getting a brand spanking Kia ceed GT (top spec). As she worked for Kia I got a friends and family discount of £8k on a £23k car! There’s a lot of margin in them. I am aware they need to make a living but if they can give £8k without blinking - £500 is nothing. Edit: obviously margins in used cars are less.
Had a call from him today but I didn't bother answering. Thinking back I dont like his attitude and even if the car was perfect I'm not sure I'd want to buy from someone like that. Again, I'm sure hes just a result of his environment but it doesn't change the fact that between 9 and 5 hes a grade A penis. The search goes on
Round 2. Went to a different dealer tonight after work. They have a similar car at a similar price however it turned out that 2 service procedures hadn't been completed. Auto gearbox fluid change and the timing belt, first being mileage related and the second age related. The car has just passed the mileage recommended for the fluid change and the age for the timing belt by a month. This time I went in knowing what I wanted and how much I could pay for the car. The salesman, who to be fair was great with me, said that if the works are carried out there would be no negotiation on price. I said that is fair enough as I understand you have margins however there are others on the market same age mileage etc which dont require this work, advertised around the same price. I thanked him for his time and said it's a shame the car hadn't come in with these already done as they may have been able to bring to price down to a price I could pay. Left the showroom and got in the car to leave. Half way through pulling out he appeared and knocked on the window and said could I hang on as they were going to check with the online service record to see if either of these had been done. He asked if on the basis they had been done or they had these done by a local specialist, would I be in a position to make a deal. We go back inside and they take some details and then go away for a bit. Comes back and asks what I can offer with the jobs done, told them my price (less than 5% off advertised)and he goes away again. Comes back and says the same as the first time, ie we can do it for the advertised price with the jobs done or knock 500 off to take the car as it is. The car looked great but I couldnt take it at their price even with the service parts done. Maybes they will get back to me next week with something inbetween and I can stick to my guns and pull them down! Possibly the most boring post on this forum however I feel like we are all invested in this situation so had to update you
Cheers lads. Was proud of myself on this one. The first guy has made me change my tactics and along with everyones help on here I'm sure I will get a good deal
I had dropped in that I have another one to look at tomorrow so hopefully that registered and gives them a push to 'work the numbers'. I'm also going to speak to an independant specialist and get a quote for the jobs that need doing. Even if the dealer says they can have them done I'd always be worried thinking they might have given someone a back hander to sign them off. Might work in my favour to have the car as it is at a discounted rate. If they can drop the price to suit that is!
I got one! Picked this up friday, drove it straight to a specialist to have the timing belt done. Ended up buying from the garage I have had 2 other cars from, I had seen it when it first arrived but it was out of my price range. A bit of patience and some negotiating got me in it! I've only got 1 shite picture of it. Thanks again for everyones help, much appreciated.
Blame it on the misses, when she next drives it! Don’t admit blame, at any cost!! Hope you get it sorted, normally about £50-60 for a wheel refurb, how bad is it?
Haha good plan I've not looked properly yet as I couldnt bring myself to check it out! About 1/8th of the wheel I've been so careful with them and honestly thought I was well away from the curb. Properly kicking myself about it.
It’s so annoying isn’t it. Especially when you try to keep things nice, the irony is, if you didn’t care you probably wouldn’t have done it. Sod’s law and all of that!
