Watched what is supposed to be the farewell flight of Vulcan XH558 today, yesterday was the northern loop and today was the southern loop. Quite a crowd at the old RAF base Manston to say goodbye to a magnificent aircraft.
Love the Vulcan, and was fortunate enough to see a rather fabulous display at Bournemouth airshow this year. The commentator got rather emotional in his talk over, and I must admit it was sad to think that would be the last time I'll see it fly (totally lost on the kids who just kept nagging me for ice cream!)
Well being one of the Older guys here, as a young guy I saw a 4 vulcan Scammble RAF finningley air show 1981, my god the earth shook and couldn't hear again for a few hours lol. Hell of an airshow, hell of a sight as 4 Vulcans took off on full power Sad to hear the last one has flown
Just sorry I never got to see any of the ' final year' displays, but a huge thank you to everyone involved in getting her airborne again, such a shame that she won't fly again. Future air displays will be much quieter events.
There's one parked right up by the fence at http://www.newarkairmuseum.org Worthy of a ride out to see it next year perhaps. If you go into the museum you can climb up into the cockpit too.
XM655 is based at Wellesbourne Aerodrome, near Stratford on Avon. They used to do ground runs ( think they still do) usually in June and also do engine warm ups every 3 months ( I think )
Yes was Saturday. Pushed our luck and drove to the bottom of the runway, parked up easily. There is a huge chain link fence but you can fit between that and a hawthorn hedge. The Vulcan did a full circle then came round a second time to land, right over my head. Have a video of it landing will try to post it later.
I was there Saturday too at that very spot perched on top of my Landrover, it's handy for me as I live close by.
Oh right. I'm originally from Misson. Moved away years ago but still got parents there. I went to school in Finningley. Hayfield comp !! Small world ?
