My mate has had a garage/ workshop build in his back garden. All finished and done but the 3/4g signal is shit and no chance of his wifi reaching that far, probably 30m What I'm planning on suggesting is Running a long Ethernet cable from his Virgin house router up and over the roof of the house down the wall and bury a conduit into the ground and run it into the garage. Is it possible to plug this end into another wireless router to turn the garage into a wifi area?? Or are there any other options? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Depending on how old the wiring and guessing he has electricity in his garage, you might get away with using the internet extender plugs! Then attach a wifi hub to the plug, might save digging in a load of cable http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing-accessories/networking/powerline/tp-link-av600-powerline-adapter-kit-twin-pack-10143560-pdt.html?store=2076&cmpid=ppc~gg~(PLA)-LOCAL~~Exact&istCompanyId=bec25c7e-cbcd-460d-81d5-a25372d2e3d7&istItemId=xtaixwwlqq&istBid=t&srcid=198&cmpid=ppc~gg~1014+(PLA)+TP+Link+SF~All+Products~Exact&mctag=gg_goog_7904&kwid=GOOGLE&device=m&ds_kids=92700019420197272&PLA=1&gclid=CICcw967_tMCFeUV0wodMl0Bng&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CLrv0d67_tMCFXAf0wodGREClQ
Yes. The 2nd router just creates it's own wifi network separate to the one it's connected to, so you have one wifi network in the house and another in the garage.
What distance would the cable have to go once you include the up and down sections? I believe the official length supported is 100 metres, more than that you may get problems, and you would also be trusted Virgin to have decent kit inside their box. Also the cable would need to be rated for external use, and so the price will be fairly high. If the garage is on the same electrical ring main you could use a powerline adapter. Alternatively an external wifi access point may be better, especially if you can mount it line of sight to the garage.
It's deffo less than 100m more like 40m The power to the garage does come from the house fuse board wether it's on the same main i don't know. I use power adapters at home and they don't work on this. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If I was you, I'd try just running a mock up to check it will work as you suggest then go to the trouble of doing a proper job. You can beat conventional hard wiring. Don't forget to let us know how you get on. I believe you are trying to set up an Access Point.
Cable it. You can get a decent weather proof cable for about £40 and a cheap enough AP and be done for less than a £100 with a decent signal.
