Hi everyone, new to the forum so I hope this is the right place to ask. Can anyone tell me how many teeth I'm supposed to have on the rear sprocket of my rr4. It's got a 40 t on at the moment and feels a bit over geared. Cheers.

Lower on the front isn't the best thing for your chain though, your better going for a 42 or 43 rear

Cheers for the advice, definitely want to Lower the gearing slightly but can't decide which sprocket to change. Any advice on the pros and cons of changing the front or rear? All new to me as I've never altered the gearing on any previous bikes.

Just a quick response to pros and cons without digging too deep:

Changing the front sprocket: cheaper, no change to unsprung mass, quicker wear of chain due to chain links rotating thru' large angle

Changing the rear sprocket: more expensive, larger sprocket adds to the unsprung mass and increases the rotational inertia of the rear wheel (both unwanted), more refined adjustment per tooth, potentially longer chain is needed.

I have an 05 and I have gone up 2 on rear on the standard chain, it's completely transformed the bike! So much more lively my advice would be to leave the front as is

Depends on what sprocket you get, my +2 rear is lighter than std one, so no problems of which you speak, plus with std chain gives you a slightly shorter wheelbase, so all good really ;)

Drive chain length on the 04-05 is 114 links. Going up 2 teeth on the rear is within range of the existing chain length any more and you'd require a longer chain.

I’m also thinking about lowering the gearing, but am wondering if it makes low speed riding a bit snatchy?
