ok I'm not condoning speeding, and I never speed :p:p.
However I'm under a time constraint to travel from A-B & back to A , was planning to travel very early in the morning so my question is

Smart motorway speed cameras are they OFF if there is no speed limit illuminated ??

    Anybody got a definitive answer

i know someone that has an ambulance that sub contracts to the nhs. The ones up around yorkshire / lancashire go off at 79mph as he has paperwork to do to prove that he was on an emergency call when the photos were taken.

As said I believe they are 'off' when not activated but do have a threshold where they are triggered if on standby.....

I know you'll come up with a plan b though

I read a report this week that they are turning all the new gantry type average speed camera on permanently and they will do you for anything above 70 !!

The M25 ones were definitely live and part of the M1, M6 and M42

I don't think they are..they are only on when speed limit signs are up...m25 & m1 that I'm usually on...

Also have noticed new cameras installed on the left side of the motorways - some are now colored in yellow..these can take a picture across all lanes. My friend had a ticket from one if these ones..

I can guarantee you they are always on if there not lit up it just means it's the national speed limit 70 mph

Guarantee? How? Would assume you always drive at 70 ;-)

And how do you explain the yellow cameras on the left side clearly visible..as are the cameras you see when off the motorway..(yellow) - called safety camera.

I think they need to clamp down on bellends sat at 60mph in the middle lane. Lets face it on a nice sunny day everyone does 80mph apart from those towing. I agree equally that these idiots in beemers/mercs/audis/range rovers etc who do a 100mph in the outside lane in the pissing rain are blends too. Im not saying i want to do 130mph everywhere but sitting along at 85ish and making good progress rarely feels like you are putting anyone at risk especially when all the traffif is doing the same.

They were only on when the variable speed restrictions were in place but a lot of them are now live permanently.

Most people do 80 on the motorway and they were never bothered with. I know when I went to the Nec everyone was going through the cameras at 80, looks like it's 70 everywhere now.

    Another cash cow, easy target

I am aware the new smart traffic cam's are live when not illuminated on the M4/M5 around Bristol. I know of people being caught got doing over 85 on these when there is no speed indicated. So be careful around this area.

I will normally do around 75 and never had a issue. Most people are driving under 70 when on this part of the road

Will anyone really admit on a forum they go any faster then 80? Lol

I guess until someone does, and gets a ticket no one will really know if the cameras are on all the time...;-)

Also even if you get a ticket...it could be from the yellow camera's on the left of the motorways
