Hi Regarding tyre pressures, We all have our own idea as to what pressures we use, but I think in general we all think it's important to know what pressure is in the tyre. I have four pressure gauges one on the inflator that is attached to the compressor, (cheap Thing). Three pop out types of different makes. I usually use the gauge on the inflator. Well I started to compare them last week. to say the least the results were interesting, and quite different. without going into detail they all read different values the variation was six PSI. this variation was surprisingly quite evenly spaced through them. I wondered if anyone knows if the garage forecourt pumps are calibrated, so I could do a little test to see what one is accurate. But the forecourt gauges get hammered so I have trouble believing they are in calibration. Also does anyone know of a good gauge that is calibrated, so I can trust it. But not too expensive. Mike.
I gave up trying to get a really accurate pressure gauge. Mine is pretty accurate but more importantly it is consistent.
Thinking about it a bit more, we are all pontificating on about tyre pressures and how 2Psi more or less makes such and such a difference, I'd like to bet most of the gauges are reading different. One of mine varies 3 to 4 Psi itself. Have we all been fooling ourselves? Mike.
Got a hand held Oxford one, its great, jase has a Michelin foot pump with gauge on, also awesome and they both match up to 0.5psi so they must be both amazingly wrong or accurate lol
I have to be honest, It may be my crap equipment. I usually like quality tools, but this one has fell through the cracks. The Airline thing came 'Free' with the compressor, the Pop up things are all inherited goodness knows how old. Are the pop ups any good, or are they known as just a guide type gauge?
Best in Test ! https://www.louis.de/en/artikel/analogue-tyre-pressure-gauge-w-tread-depth-gauge/10003472?list=33022925
I was reading the Auto Express , they did a test on tyre pressure gauges and Halifords one came out top. I,m not sure how to put a link up but if you google : best tyre pressure gauge 2014 : its there.
I use a digital (Topeak - for push bikes) one and it does me fine. It's consistent which is the key. The garage forecourt ones are all over the place in my experience. If I must use one (would normally just inflate with a track pump at home), I normally over-inflate slightly and then adjust the pressure down using my digital gauge.
Test Results: "PS" magazine tested 18 different tyre pressure gauges in its 11-2013 issue. The Rothewald Analogue Tyre Pressure Gauge was rated GOOD, and achieved 46 out of a possible 50 points. The following features were given special mention: - Very good measurement results - Clear, easy-to-read display - Connection fits snugly (Of the other gauges tested, six were rated Good, and two were judged Very Good) "MOTORRAD NEWS" magazine tested the Rothewald Analogue Tyre Pressure Gauge in its 01/2010 issue. Extracts from the verdict: "The Louis tyre pressure gauge is a handy tool to have on trips if you find you often have to adjust the tyre pressure to suit different surfaces. It has a solid metal body with a grippy rubber covering." "If you get the (...) version with steel-braided hose, you'll find the 45° angle works well on the valve. A clever feature of the Louis tyre pressure guage is a metal prong for precisely measuring your tyre tread depth. The minimum permitted tread depth is clearly indicated by a green/red bar on the dial, making it very easy to read." In its 5-2014 issue, "Motorrad" magazine tested various tyre pressure gauges. The Rothewald Analogue Tyre Pressure Gauge was rated VERY GOOD. The following features were given special mention: - Stylish analogue gauge - One of the most accurate of the gauges tested - Sturdily constructed - Perfect for use at home (Four out of fourteen products tested were rated "Very Good")
