I am making up a set of doors for an outbuilding, it's a bit Heath-Robinson as it basically is just an existing hole in a wall where the previous owner built a little porch type affair*. I have some 100x100 fence posts that I can bind to the building, and am going to use some 12mm external ply as the doors (approx 2mx1.2m each) Question is how much gap do I need to leave between the door and the posts, and between the doors themselves? Tried searching but everything seems to be related to internal or upvc doors where they seem to say a 2mm gap is needed. *currently looks like a shanty building and is going to fall down on it's on soon!
The calculation you need to make has to allow for the amount of sunlight that will fall on said doors and posts, and at what the average temperature will be in the coldest and hottest periods, (including allowance for the coldest day and hottest day which is divided by the square root of py x by 2.892367 and converted to Fahrenheit), then you need to know the degrees of dampness in the wood and then subtract the dryness that will be imparted by the preservative you will use which the manufacturer can advise, this is measured in the gradient known in the timber trade as degrees of boll ox. The dampness of the rain is critical and has to be measured when it’s raining. Most people forget that the thermal expansion and contraction of the hardware they use will also impact gap sizes so don’t forget that ! All in all I think you will find that the calculation results will be a little greater or thereabouts slightly more than you were expecting to use. Post some pics up when completed
Cheers matey, always nice to have another expert run an eye over my figures and confirm the accuracy
The level of expertise on this forum never ceases to amaze me, I was going to use the RMS value of the cosine of the hypotenuse divided by the beats per minute of the wings of the African Honey Hummingbird multipled by 55378008
Forget measurements and calculations..... Just throw it together in the similar fashion that @Selmer50mark recently did his new shed!! If you'd seen that you'd realise that no one really cares and a blind man on a galloping horse wouldn't notice the hideous DIY joinery that the average Joe at home finds acceptable
